Common Shower Plumbing Problems

Most of us, hopefully, take showers frequently.  This kind of constant use can lead to drainage or leakage problems over a long period of time. No one wants to bathe in a clogged drain that leaves you up to your ankles in dirty water, or a leaky showerhead that gets water all over the bathroom floor. Left untreated, these common shower problems can lead to more serious plumbing issues that could affect the integrity of your house. Here are some of the most common shower plumbing issues and how you can solve them.

Water Pressure

If the water pressure has gone down in your shower, it likely means that you need a new showerhead. Extended use can cause a lime buildup that makes it harder for water to pass through the showerhead, leading to a dribble rather than a full spray. This problem can usually be remedied by scrubbing your shower head down with a bathroom cleaner. If that doesn’t work, a showerhead replacement may be needed. Consult a plumber before replacing your shower head, especially if you’re unfamiliar with the plumbing system in your home.

Clogged Drain

The most common culprit of a clogged drain is hair. Make sure there are no clumps of hair or other debris in the strainer of your shower drain. If your strainer is removable, take it out and see if there’s anything stuck in the pipe. If your strainer is not easily removable, consult a plumber to have it taken off. If you can’t identify the problem at first, try a chemical drain cleaner, but be warned—they are very toxic and can corrode your pipes, leading to more plumbing problems.

If your shower is leaking, it likely means there is an issue connecting the showerhead to the waterline, or that the bathroom walls need to be re-caulked to seal in water. In either case, consult a plumber before moving forward—if treated improperly, shower leaks can spread to affect the rooms below and next to the bathroom.

Shower plumbing issues can range from mild to serious. Sometimes the solution is as easy as doing a little extra scrubbing or pulling some hair out of a drain. For the more serious problem problems, contact us at Drain King Express & Plumtek Solutions for all your bathroom and shower needs.
